irrational emotions

i'm not sure how we wound up there, however i do suppose that it could be called good olde 'surfing the web.'

we were catching up on some news items and then there was a google consultation and after a few random clicks we wound up parousing the phobia list.

it seems after some careful self-diagnosis, that i suffer from phobophobia, mixed with a little hobophobia--that is a phobia of phobias and a fear of becoming a bum on the street. what is your phobia?

the mighty boosh

without hesitation, this bbc series is good enough to challenge even the tightest vice-grip bladders out there-- you'll laugh so hard that you'll just pee.

season one was odd and it was a bit uncertain where they were going. season two came out roaring and evolved eons from the first year. so far, season three is nothing but pure magic.

some other good boosh video clips here.

politically incorrect

this is just a fantastic picture that covered a box of taffy from tennessee a colleague received this week.

i especially enjoy the cop in the lower left who seems to be peeking in on the whole scene.

something fantastic

i saw something unusual and yet altogether glorious the other day. as i was biking up to a building on campus, the roar of a car stereo--windows tightly rolled up--got louder and louder as i approached. i was soon able to identify "mr. brownstone" by g'n'r, baby. the fidelity of the car stereo was near full capacity, engine off. somebody just wanted to finish rockin' the tune. don't blame 'em.

then i came upon the specific car, a silver mercedes, with a middle-aged blonde woman wearing a grey business suit seemed to be savoring the last few licks from slash as axl professed that "he won't leave me alone." perplexed, i ventured on and found a place to lock up my bike, yet still in full earshot of the tunes. then, just as quickly as the song started to taper to an end--click, boom, clack, clack, clack--she nixed the supplemental battery power and extinguished the music and hopped out of her car to quickly saunter up to the building she was parked outside of. it appeared that the timing of "mr. brownstone" may have caused her to be late. very nice.

murmur

is the applause "roar" that an american crowd makes different than one of comparable size and purpose from another country? let's take an example, say a group of 20,000 people at a paul simon concert in three different locations: prague, cleveland, and new delhi. paul simon plays the exact same songs, in the same order in all three locations on independent wednesday nights, all with a mild and comfortable temperature.

my question then is this: at the end of the concert, when the crowd shows appreciation by vocalizing (hooting and hollering), whistling, and clapping-- standing from afar, are you able to ascertain any noticable differences between the three different crowds' respective applause and murmurs?

now, i am aware of certain events or sports teams that have special claps or chants both domestically and the world over--but i am curious just about the general crowd uproar.

in the natural world, it may be a comperable situation to say three trees, each full with three different types of birds. one solitary bird can be compared with solitary birds from the other two groups, and subtleties and qualities can be weighted. but taken as an amass of birds perched on every square inch of a tree's real estate, each of the three trees sounds just like a lot of squawking. it is my hunch that human crowds, likewise from afar, sound like a general murmur of human noise regardless of language and culture.

jury duty

i received a letter from the local jury commission yesterday informing me that i have been randomly selected for jury duty. always wondered when my number would come up in the lottery. it would be nice if they gave out some sort of citizenry door prize that you would be randomly selected to receive, no? a. informs me that i should be excited about partaking in one of the few citizen responsibilities asked of us. i see her point and have now converted my thinking of "how is this going to work out" to "i'm gonna sit on a jury with henry fonda and ensure justice is had" (12 angry men reference for you young whipper snappers).

in other news, i have been drinking a reishi mushroom tea for the past month or so at work, and hadn't noticed that besides its effects on bolstering my immune system, in loud green letters it has been making a phonetic claim of, well...

the funniest horror film i have ever seen

completely on a whim, we stumbled into the theatre the other afternoon and took in this film with justin and coralie. i have not laughed so hard in a theatre in years. this gem of a demi-mocumentary had me convulsing in my $6 rented seat, smacking my knees, laughing until my cheeks hurt, and stomping the floor wildly. oh, what sad sad joy it is. if you haven't done so, buy your tickets today-- the laundry can wait 'til another day.
