dvd

the first dvd player I owned was not only second-hand, but it was an early generation, manufactured in 1996. that player made it to '06 before being riddled with old age and skips.
in '06, we bought a new dvd unit from the store. there started to be a few glitches about 6 months in. and in the past two months, a rash of consistent errors has plagued the machine.
it irks me, personally, that this machine is showing signs of failure in one-fifth the lifetime than it's predecessor did--yet, logic tells me to view this as an isolated incident and not to drag down the whole system with our single experience of product-performance malcontent. however, once I became vocal regarding these erred symptoms, a chorus of other similar voices chimed in and echoed a myriad of kindred problems with their dvd players as well.
perhaps we're all just homebodies who put too many miles on our units, or perhaps the failing machines are more a result of consumer-demand for cheaper electronics that just don't fit the bill for quality goods.

texas high school football

i never woulda thunk it, but we have been seriously geeking on the show, friday night lights. we finished season one in just over a week and a half.

the show is about a small texas town high school football team and all the excitement and drama that ensues for being a part of all three of those descriptors.

there is love, anger, insecurity, drug-use, violence, infidelity, youth naivety, leadership, regret, racism, teamwork, physical disabilities, perseverance, doubt, dysfunction, mental instability, drinking, stealing, cheating, bribery, and innocence.

the rich irony is that i have never really cared for texas or football--high school was alright and i thoroughly enjoy a good high school movie here and there--but both we're beside ourselves with the genuine enjoyment that has come from being entranced by this series. season 2 is on dvd and has quickly found itself to the front of our queue.

heros

we have been watching a great deal of the show, heros, recently. it undulates from mildly entertaining to "let's watch another!" some of the characters grate at my skin and i await sylar excising their frontal lobes. and some of the characters are good to great. at the top of the list, hiro nakamura.

it could be our roots exposed from living in japan, or even traced further back to my youth growing up next to a japanese-american family--but hiro is a fantastic character and keeps my eyes fixed on the laptop screen.

we are nearing the end of season 1, and luckily season 2 is viewable streaming online, too.
